The first thing to know is what type of hydrangea you have. The most common reasons for them not blooming, in my experience, are incorrect pruning, or having a variety that is not truly hardy in your area. If you let us know what kind you have and where you are, perhaps we can suggest further ideas.

I ran into this a couple of times this past summer. My daughter's hydrangeas (Endless Summer, purchased at Home Depot about 10 yrs ago) bloomed beautifully for years and didn't bloom at all this year. And a neighbor at the campground where I handle all of the landscaping had the same problem - years and years of tons of blooms and nothing this past summer. The only thing I can think of is the severe cold and overload of snow we had last year. Sun was the same (no trees), although it was a cooler summer than normal. That all being said, my hydrangea did fine. Mine is a 7 yr old Limelight, which blooms on old and new wood. We're in zones 5 and 5a. I'm wondering if next year I should fertilize them - something I've never had to do with a hydrangea.
