DIY Lighted Canvas for Christmas

Last year for Christmas, I wanted to create a large display for the shelf above our entertainment center that said "Merry and Bright." I used large, stained wooden letters for "Merry," but I wanted "Bright" to be lighted. Here's my solution for a simple lighted sign that doesn't require power tools.
You will need a blank canvas, paint (I used gold), a pencil, craft knife, and two strands of battery powered lights to make your own.
I started by sketching out my word and painting it on the canvas.
I plotted out where my lights would go on the back of the canvas. Popped them through, secured the battery packs, and Voila!
Here it is in my final display.

How did you get the lights to stay in place? I made a similar sign last year but either the holes were too big of i did something wrong. Only way I could secure mine was with hot glue.
