Looks great to me! -
Winnie, it is concrete...is a deeper sized bowl birdbath and i just put some dirt in it and added the sedum...I kept it fairly wet at first while it was taking root, and now if we aren't getting rain, just a little water every couple of days. It doesnt need a lot. It does NOT have any drain holes in it and its doing great! Thank you all for the lovely comments! ;-)

I will have to try this...so pretty. -
LINE THE BIRD BATH WITH HEAVY POND LINER or the soil WILL ruin the concrete in NO time !! -
my husband drilled holes in mine for drainage and planted 2 different colors of potato vine in mine. Very happy with the results! -
I drill holes in mine and planted sedum and purple heart . -
I have a birdbath not in use, now I have a use for it. Thanks for the information. -
I wonder how this will fair during the winter. I would love to see pics next year. -

So did the Packers win tonight Sharon B? I didn't ask my guys that stayed up watching it. I was asleep but all their yelling woke me. I'm thinking it wasn't a good game with the fill in refs. You're bird bath planter looks pretty too. -
I did the same with my concrete birdbath, it had a crack, so that was great for drainage. I also put sedum; hen & chicks. Looks great :) -
Great idea, I have an old bird bath that I will try on this next season. -
Great ideas guys! -
Succulents are so easy to maintain. I leave mine out all year long - in the snow too and never water them. They look amazing - and it's been about 6 years! Love your trailing sedum! -
My husband did this too in an area where the sedum gets LOTS of sun and it has looked pretty good all through the summer, even though we had an extremely hot summer! I love succulents. What a great idea! -
I like that idea -
What is all that red stuff? Is it bark? -
The red stuff is mulch..........chipped and shredded bark. -
I just made this, thanks for the idea. My kid knocked the bird bath over and the stand broke. I built a stand with bricks that I had left over from another project and filled the bath with rocks and hens and chicks. I love how it turned out. My mom has a lager one in her front yard and it is spilling hens and chicks; it is gorgeous too. -

Nice "save," Andrea! -
These cement birdbaths are so nice because u can do so much with them and great job, love just the hens and chicks for sure w big rocks....nice and great the way u built it up on the bricks........gave me an idea for u to now that Fall is here, why not add some fake leaves, etc. around the bottom just under the top....don' u think it would b pretty???? -
I did this once before until the deer realized that I just made them a nice table with a good meal in it. They gobbled up all my flowers that were so very pretty. Note to self don't plant petunias at deer level. -
Do you have to drill a drainage hole or will the succulents take the extra water when it gets it. I know birdbaths tend to dry out pretty quickly, and I have one that I am constantly filling. Think I will do this this spring! -
I didn't drill a hole. The rocks elevate the dirt and the plants and in the summer it is nice to have some extra water on the bottom. It dries up fairly quickly. You don't have to worry about too much water even if you have rain for days because the plants are higher than the edge of the birdbath. At least mine are. Succulents don't have deep roots, they are pretty much on the surface and spread horizontally.
