The Peace Lily- a Great Choice for a Houseplant

The Peace lily (Spathiphyllum) is one of the easiest plants to grow. It can be found in many floral shops and even garden centers. Right now mine are not blooming since bringing them inside but most of you may know the white calla looking blooms.
The Peace lily can tolerate very low light as long as you keep it moist but not wet. However, the Peace lily will not bloom without the right amount of sun or light. If indoors you will have a better chance of blooms if the plant is in a room facing South or West and receives bright indirect light (away from the window about 6-8 foot). Mine has actually bloomed in front the south facing window but it has filtered sun from all the Oaks that surround my home.
If the leaves turn brown, cut them off. If you forget to water it, soak it really well and it will perk back up in a few hours. You can even grow these beauties in vases with water just covering the roots. Some have even put them in small neck vases with beta fish who nibble at the roots.

Yes, I also have cats and they occasionally try to use my large, floor plants for a litter box. Will try another Peace Lilly. Has anyone tried using plastic forks, tines up? If so did the forks work?
  • I have never had my cats use the plants. I am glad. I would try to use forks or anything t stick up in the pot so the cats cannot step on the soil.
