Pergo flooring on Stairs

LandlightS on Sep 26, 2012You can renovate your stairs with new, retrofit oak stair treads........BUT DO NOT USE A LAMINATED product (ig: Pergo) on the stairs. It is very dangerous because of the slick finish.Helpful Reply

Shari on Sep 26, 2012As I have mentioned on several other threads here on HomeTalk, I have some laminate flooring in my house (but no stairs) and I absolutely hate it. Hate. It. LandlightS is so right--laminate flooring is extremely slick. Your dogs will probably have some degree of difficulty walking on it. (The bigger the dog, the more problem they seem to have.) As my dogs got older and less agile, I had to put down throw rugs in all the traffic paths just so they could get enough traction to move from one room to another so I cannot even imagine them trying to navigate up and down stairs covered in laminate. And it's just not pets that have difficulty walking on it. Certain types of shoe soles on laminate can be an accident waiting to happen. I have slipped and nearly fallen several times so now, unless I am heading out the door to go somewhere, I only go barefooted or wear shoes with a rubber sole in the house. Also, laminate is very noisy. At one time we had 3 German Shepherds. FORTY-EIGHT dog toenails on their 12 big feet constantly clicking across the laminate floors was almost enough to drive me and my husband absolutely insane. Please trust me when I say, laminate flooring is definitely NOT a solution to your problem.Helpful Reply

Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com on Sep 27, 2012Dianne, Laminate floors have a place, but as LandlightS posted, slick and not correct for stair. As far as overhang of the treads. This tells me who ever installed them did not do it correctly. If they were properly done, the contractor would have cut the original steps back flush with the riser and then using the proper bull nose designed for the steps the step would only then protrude about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch. As far as laminate in a house with doggies, I have this stuff in one of my upstairs rooms. I put it in several years ago, It was the time when Pergo first came out and the sections were glued together. Came out great, still looks great. But as Shair, said, I too hate it. Unless I keep my dogs nails cut really short, when he comes in the room and starts dancing around the clicking noise drives me nuts. Ideally the carpet on the steps is the best for the dogs, so they do not fall, and as they get older it becomes harder for them to keep their feet from sliding. There are oak treads that can replace what you have if they are not in good shape, but a good flooring person can make even the worse wood steps look pretty nice just by a proper refinish job.Helpful Reply
