Does anyone have any advice on building a shelf similar to this picture? Is it easy? Will it be cheaper than purchasing one?

What about turning a bookcase sideways and adding legs to it. That was the first thing I thought of when I looked at it. I haven't ever tried anything like that but with some simple moldings around the edges you might be able to get that effect with shelves built sideways into it.
