Easy DIY Rustic Range Hood

Once upon a time our microwave was the focal point for our entire open concept living area...it was HUGE and demanded attention because of the placement! We finally got rid of it and added an EASY Rustic Range Hood that doubles as a shelf that we can decorate for every season!
Do you see what I mean? And we could see this front and center from (almost) the entire downstairs...
First we took out the microwave and removed the cabinet doors and added subway tiles to the drywall that was covered by the microwave...
Next we cut some very old beams (we bought them from a specialty lumber yard) - to make a simple box to go around the range hood...
Because we love the old beams, we made them work for this project by piecing them together...you could easily use new wood and beat it up to make it look repurposed and rustic... We put the doors back on -
And we truly love the finished product!
Here's how it looks all decorated for Christmas...and if you're wondering WHERE we put the microwave! Stay tuned...(full tutorial on the blog)
*** I'm adding this photo because of all the "concern" about the rustic wood combined with the painted cabinets. Not necessarily trying to defend our choice :) but maybe to help ppl who need to understand why we chose the rustic element for the hood...also,
Enjoyed the project?
