Gerie Elliott on Dec 13, 2014I use a pond heater to keep the water open to allow the fumes from decay to be released. I do not feed my fish in the winter. The birds, neighborhood cats and squirrels appreciate the open water.Helpful Reply

Shari Allen on Dec 13, 2014My daughter has a pond she has had for 5+ years. She doesn't do anything. The fish do ok and none have died. Another friend didn't do anything to hers and it got ice on top and the fish did fine.Helpful Reply

Sgmclawhorn on Dec 13, 2014`I feed them daily....they always come to the top of the water to get the food. When they no longer come to get the food, it is always very cold and I know to stop feeding them. When the weather warms up again, I start feeding them and know they will then come to the top for the food. I have had my fish for about 15 years and have not had any that died.Helpful Reply

Pogonip nevada on Dec 13, 2014Stop feeding fish if the water drops below 50 degrees. Make sure to keep a hole to vent gases from decaying vegetation if your pond freezes over in winter. I use a small fountain pump 24/7 rather than a de-icer.Helpful Reply
