About Me:

I have been gardening for over twenty years. I enjoy puttering around the garden and looking for that special plant that's on my "plant list". When I lived in Southern California I had over a hundred Hybrid Teas and Old English roses and I served on the board of directors for the Santa Clarita Rose Society. I miss my roses. I haven't had much luck with them here in Georgia. My tastes in plants have changed over the years. I am drawn to tropicals, reds, yellows, and oranges. I especially like Alocasias because of their large foliage and anything that is scented. There isn't a lot that I don't like. I read anything and everything about gardening and watch way too much gardening tv. And I love to compost! Gardening brings me joy!

Gardening: What's ailing my Coleus??

I'm getting this discoloration on the leaves of my red Coleus - only the red. The spots are only on the older leaves. There are no visible signs of ?? on the cuttings I've taken from these plants. I've sprayed the affected plants with a fungicide, with no results. Any ideas??? Forgot to mention, they are in my greenhouse.

Gardening: What is this white powder on my pots?

Another question for Douglas. I have a white powder on the pots in my greenhouse. The containers were brand new and the plants were potted for a little over a month. I've seen mineral buildup on terracotta pots is this mineral deposits? If so, why only on the bottom portion of the pots?

Mysterious white ring solved - After further investigation I found that everything sitting in ...»
the floor of the greenhouse had the same ring, so when all else fails, I ask my husband if he had any idea what could have caused this to happen. He said that it had to be from standing water - makes sense. We have had a tremendous about of rain in Georgia, which must have flooded the greenhouse up to the level on the pots, heater, etc. He's a smart cookie. Now we have some grading to do.... Thanks so much for all the feedback!

Gardening: What's eating my spinach??

Could snails be eating the spinach in my greenhouse? I have half eaten leaves at the base of my spinach plants. How do I control the problem organically?

Gardening: I'm having problems with Fungus Gnats in my greenhouse.

I have a lot of vegetables growing, so I don't want to use chemicals. Is there anything I can use that is safe for food crops? I don't want to poison my yummy spinach.

Gardening: How can I get rid of ants in potting mix in my greenhouse?

Ants have taken over my potting mix. I bought a bag of diatomaceous earth at Lowe's but it doesn't say anything on the bag about being safe to use on or around food crops. Is it safe to ...»
use when starting vegetable/herb seeds? If not, are there any suggestions for getting rid of the ants.

Thanks Douglas! I will have to go to a nursery to get the food grade d.e. I have 2 cubic feet ...»
of potting mix, so it would take some time to place in bags and set in the sun, but that is a good idea. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!!

  • Placing the planks in a slight curve as well as random alignment made for a slightly more interesting take. 4

A little walkway out of pallet boards

This quick little project really couldn't be easier! Reclaimed pallet boards were used to create a new walkway through a flower bed. The planks make it an absolute dream to weed by simply ...»
lifting the applicable board, and are just high enough to clear any water run off. And yes, they are staying in place and have shown no rot in over 3 years thus far.
