How to clean/whiten cloth doll

I have a handmade cloth doll that is close to 50 years old. I think she was made of cotton, she is a little yellowed over the years. I want to clean her, but am afraid to wash her in a machine (even in a pillowcase on gentle). Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Could you post a picture of the doll? Depending on the stuffing of the doll, I'd worry about her getting so saturated that it would take while to dry. Also, the agitation of a machine could damage the fabric even in a pillow case. Hopefully others with more experience will offer advice, good luck.

If the doll was mine and that old and too fragile to wash why not love it like it is? I mean the doll is 50 years old, don't we all show a few "character marks" after that long?
