You can buy paint now called deck over by Pittsburgh paints that you don't have to sand and it will fill in holes up to 1/4th inch. Covers splinters and has a 30 yr life guarantee if done properly. Which means you must clean and scrub deck with deck cleaner or bleach and dry 48 hrs before applying. We just did all our porches and decks attached to the house and this spring will do the deck around our pool.
