How a heat register and a doorway morphed into a fence:

I like finding details in homes and using them... not copying them exactly, but being inspired by them to create something that fits with the theme of the home. The room where those details were found is the dining room and has a nice view of the fence.

That's so cool! I went to school for Illustration & Design, and we did touch upon the Arts & Crafts movement, but in relation to typography and book design. I forgot it had a lot more to do with architecture and woodworking! It's great to see history can still be relevant. :) Thanks for the lesson!

Tudors are my favorite type of house and this fence is fabulous! So nice to see the classic design carried to the outside.

That's the perfect fence for that house. And yes, thanks for the design lesson. I love learning about stuff like that!

Glad you like it Jennifer. I'm not a stickler on sticking with a particular style, yet too often the history is ignored entirely. Often the old is a great resource for "new ideas." :-)

Wow Brian - what a fabulous job you did!! Sure not your run-of-the-mill picket fence!! Did you also make the archway - that's pretty impressive too! All the ladies love your dog - me included!!

Absolutely fantastic work here. Fortunately I was able to see the project photos as you were building it, so I know the detail and craftsmanship you put into it. You know, the stuff under the stain that really matters. Nice work and thanks for sharing.

Hamtil Construction LLC - sounds like you and Brian have some "history" together!! It's always nice when two contractors can look at each other's work and appreciate it and be complimentary!!

Thanks Susan S , but actually I just met Brian on a contractor forum about a month ago. However, it is not too hard to spot when someone takes the time to build a project with details in mind. It is nice to see that others care about lasting quality and not just getting a check and moving on down the road..

Thanks Susan and Paul, I will link the article with all the details of the construction as soon as it is available online. I cut the arched panels for the fence with a bandsaw, the gate building with the arch detail was a rather involved process (as Paul alludes to). One interesting tidbit is that all the short balusters are recycled from an old deck railing.

I just noticed that my Golden Retriever is in all the fence photos! No wonder she received so many nice comments. It is fun having a sweet old dog who can go to work with me sometimes. She is my trusted assistant.

This is really nice. I love repurposed things. Your retriever is beautiful. You could give her the title of "personal assistant" :)

Thanks Miriam I. and A Lapin Life

Brian was easy to work with to make what I wanted (a fence that wasn't too closed in, that complemented the style & age of my house) come to life.

Marje - well lucky you! - oh I just realized that's what Miriam said. Guess she & I share the same sentiments. It looks fantastic and I'm sure you're enjoying it immensely. Did you give Brian's "Personal Assistant" a special bonus as well?

Hi Becky H and Deck and Patio Company "Outdoor Living Experts" Glad you like the fence. The bottom rail on the gate has a water-shedding design you might appreciate with the bottom panel edge cut to fit over a peak:

It's really cool to have the builder and owner of the fence here on the same thread. Thanks for chiming in Marje!
