You can as long as they have a laminate cover.

@Pam Brown Even though they say you don't have to... you should prime the cabinets first. just use a normal primer light or dark depending on the shade you intend to paint. Then paint away. The primer with help with the high traffic use of your cabinets.

Light sanding, paint with kilnz and then you can paint with any color you want. The primer insures less chipping.

Sounds like you have a laminate surface. First clean each one with TSP. (Trisodiumphosphate) This will take off the grease particles from cooking as well as de-gloss them some. You can also buy a de-glosser. The more manufactured gloss you get off the better as that is where the paint wont adhere long term over. Kilz is a good primer and then especially if they are flat paint with a small roller. You will get a nicer finish. I painted with a brush and then did the finishing coat with a roller. Thin coats work best. I ended up painting mine black and it took 4 coats. You can seal with butchers wax or a polyurethane but see how the light reflects off of it. I did not like them shiny. I also saved about 2 cups of paint in a mason jar and keep under my sink. When they chip - the ones you open the most where your finger nails may hit you have a quick fix ready to go.

I have laminate cabinets that I painted. The key is to use a shellac-based primer. I got it at Home Depot--Zinser, Bin or Kilz--Idr which. Sand lightly to clean and scuff. The primer is alcohol-based so it's kinda fumey but it works great. Dries quickly to a matte finish. You can use latex over it.

Southern Belle Decorative Paint is a paint created specifically for furniture and cabinet painting and contains real chalk. You do not have to sand or prime. You can wax or use any sealer with the paint, depending on the look you are going for or your traffic needs. Please visit www.facebook.com/southernbellepaint and message me and I will be happy to help you anyway I can. I recently posted some laminate display pieces that I just dipped my brush and painted. Nontoxic, durable, no VOC.....can paint cabinets while you cook your dinner. Really. Also, you say you are on a budget....the quarts are 25.00 each but they will cover between 125-150 sq ft....a small set of kitchen cabinets. You do not have to buy primer. You can be done in 1 day. You can created a clean vibrant modern look or a vintage antiqued look. Lots of options for less money. Literally can do your cabinets for 75.00 or less depending on what look you want and amount of cabinets you have.
