Painted old hardwood floors in a whitewashed checkerboard
Refinishing wasn't an option, so I painted our old and scratched hardwood floors in our foyer in a grayish-blue and white whitewash checkerboard pattern. Will they stand up to my 2 goldens and 2 little boys? Only time will tell, but so far, so good! #Bestof2012
Hey, nothing ventured, nothing gained. You were planning on refinishing the floors at a later date, so you did an excellent job to have a beautiful floor in the meantime as well as take an opportunity to experiment and learn something! That is the fun of the DYI game!
Holly: They're gorgeous! What a nice job. Great to meet you last Friday (already seems like ages ago...). I just joined Hometalk and am slowly...getting started here!
Oh my goodness I adore this! I want wood floor just so I can DO this! :) Wow... I've changed my mind on wood floors forever after seeing yours... (looking over my NEW ones as I speak... ack!)
Thank you all! My hubby really thought I was crazy... but I couldn't stand to look at the gouged and scratched floors a second longer and decided to go for it. :)
Storywood Designs This is so super cool! I love it. Bravo for your bravery! Whyyy do so many think wood should be left aunatural..I dont get it. Unless it is a spectacular wood grain like Kevin KMS Woodworks has worked with. I would love a fun floor! How is it holding up so far?
The paint job is great...I had not seen this post before. Thanks Bernice H .
But from what i see I think this floor is PINE not hardwood. The grain pattern is very typical of pine. Your pic does not have a lot of detail in the before, but the fact that this floor was in such sad shape support the pine theory as well.

Pine is not the best option for flooring for a number of reasons...its softness is the primary one. Expansion + Contraction is another.
KMS Woodworks, you are right - it is Pine! The previous owners installed it in the foyer during a renovation and I think it was a decision to cut costs on their part. I call everything wood and on my floors in my house hardwoods, and it's not the correct terminology in this case. :-) My mom has gorgeous heart pine flooring throughout her home but I can attest to the fact that these cheap pine planks make a horrible flooring choice. Part of the reason why I didn't feel guilty painting them!
