Homemade Carpet Powder

Carpet powder is one product that I can't do without. Even though it is a reasonable price, I buy so much of it that it works out to be pretty expensive. Plus, it doesn't always work as well as I like.

Homemade carpet powder to the rescue!! It's cheap to make & it has not met an odor that it doesn't take care of. And I have 8 indoor animals - I should know!

You only need 2 ingredients to prepare a batch. Check out the link for the simple tutorial.

An empty Parmesan cheese container makes the perfect container for homemade carpet powder.

Just 2 ingredients - stir them up together & you're good to go!

Just sprinkle it on the carpet, let it sit for a few minutes, and vacuum it all up.

So clever! I bet the orange essential oil smells great and covers up the odor from your 8 pets!

I like this especially since orange is one scent my sinuses can tolerate. Thanks Crystal.

this is great since commercial carpet powder sends me to the ER every time. I am so allergic to it.

There is a link in the post to where I get mine, Kerry. You can also get them where the candles are in most stores.

Health food stores also have scented oils too. We use their Pure Peppermint oil (not essential though) on cotton balls to keep mice from coming in our home. It really works.

i'm not sure why people add "soiling" to their carpets in an attempt to clean them. Anyone who has ever removed carpet will clearly see the dirt that filters down into and beyond the pad. Whether this is baking soda or some other material it is there. Vacs do not remove all of the dirt...

This is one reason why people with allergens suffer more in carpeted homes. My home is mostly hardwood and tile. We have some larger area rugs that can be easily removed and cleaned as needed. ...»

I agree Kevin, but most don't vacuum the way I do. My family thinks my vacuuming style is overkill, but I go over each area at least twelve times and slowly. I know even that won't get it all, but I'm sure I get more than the average person does. You have reminded me I need to get the area rugs out for a cleaning before the cold sets in though. Thanks!

Yes Char it really works. We moved in our, at the time new home, just over nine years ago. Being that it's surrounded by farmland we had a major problem with mice the first winter. I stopped counting at two dozen trapped. After that my hubby did some online research and read about putting a few drops of Pure Peppermint Oil (NOT essential oil) on cotton balls placed around ones exterior basement walls at the ceiling would keep mice ...»
from coming inside. Until I accidentally brought one in about a month ago with something that had been stored in the garage (one of our four cats soon got it) we have not had a mouse in our home. We have four cats, but there was four years before we got them that we had no mice either. You can find the right oil at most health food stores. In fact they'll probably know just what you need. The clerks at the store we shop at did.

I would probably love the smell, but was told years ago by a carpet manufacturer to never use powder on your carpet. Despite how fine it is, it's still abrasive, some of it remains in your carpet, despite how well you vacuum, and that every time you walk on it, the abrasive particles rub the carpet fibers and causes the carpet to deteriorate much faster than without powder. Oh, and the powder can void any vacuum cleaner warranty you may have, as well.

I'd never heard that Leslie. There's a very popular carpet cleaner that's dry which seems odd after what you said. I can't remember the name of it now. I've never used it personally.

Yes Leslie, vacuuming up powder (both store bought and DIY) gives your vacuum emphysema and strains the motor, especially bag types.

Well pretty much all dust is powder like, at least what I see when emptying my vacuum. I very rarely have used powder carpet fresheners so it's not just that. Ofcourse most of what I pick up is cat hair since we have four long haired cats.

I had a customer that his house keeper used carpet fresh for years. It took me months to get it out of his carpet. And it made me itch like crazy. I could see where this would work in a pinch but I use commercial vacuum cleaners that have incredible suction power and I was still picking up carpet fresh after several months so I would be very limited on using it much.

I've used the store-bought dry carpet cleaner called "Capture". It seemed to work quite well. But yes, it is going to leave some residue into the fibers (and under the carpet..you'll notice when you remove the carpet it's still there). On the other hand, there's little to no fragrance, no drying time and in a pinch, not a bad idea overall.

Thank you Connie. That's the dry cleaner I was talking about. I just couldn't think of it.
