If they are white, use bleach; for colored towels, use Borax added to the laundry detergent, or Biz.

Or add fabric softner to the wash, remove from washer asap (sitting wet for a long while contributes to smell) and make sure the towels are DRY. I like to use a 1/2 cup of add baking soda in the washing cycle.
  • Simply wash in hot water with your normal laundry soap and then add a capful or two of white vinegar and then another capful of vinegar in the rinse fabric dispenser. White vinegar is great for towels.

Wash them in white vinegar (no detergent) then wash them with baking soda. I use ERA so I put the same amount of white vinegar in the detergent area, then put the same amount in the fabric softener area and ran it through a regular cycle. Then I put a ERA cap full of baking soda over the towels and ran another regular cycle. Seems to have taken the smell out of the towels.

Vinegar works great. I use the sanitize cycle (hot water) on my machine, also don't leave them in your washed once the cycle is done.

I worked in laundry at an assisted living facility, we were told to use vinegar for urine and "other" odors, as well as all the kitchen laundry.

Just wash a few towels at a time with bleach or borax AND detergent. Sometimes, I air dry my towels to eliminate the smell. I think front load washers cause the smell sometimes. If the bleach/borax and detergent doesn't work, try adding white vinegar or baking soda. But I think the key is not to wash too many towels at a time, and wash them often.

Try rinsing them in white vinegar. Vinegar cuts soap suds, grease & odors. Good to rinse your hair in to bring back the shine. And when giving bed bathes. Helps to remove soap from the skin & rinse the person with white vinegar in the rinse water. Cuts the soap & odors. Also rinse your dogs with vinegar water. Just don't get it in their eyes.

I agree with vinegar and hot water; you might have to do it more than once. If you use fabric softner, maybe you should cut back on the amount used

I did it with my usual laundry detergent PLUS 2-3 dishwasher detergent pods or 1/2 cup of dry(box) dish det. Lemon scent is the best! you'll be amazed.
