Painting and distressing a coffee table

I've looked at several tutorials about painting and distressing furniture. One thing I'm confused about is where furniture is distressed it always looks brown. Should this coffee table be painted darker first?

Hi Kristi! The color that shows through on the distressed areas is the color that is underneath the paint you apply. So in this instance, that warm brown pine color will be showing. If you wish it to be darker, then you would need to stain it the darker color you would like to show as your contrast. Or, you can paint the piece, then sand the edges, then add a dark glaze or wax over the entire surface. But that will darken the paint color as well as the underneath wood color. Just remember not too sand too hard, because then the unstained layer may show through! Good luck!

Several things you can do... The comment was made above to add a dark glaze or wax. Try a piece of wood first so you will know what to expect. A wooden picture frame will work too.. You can sand the edges and what I did when the lighter edges came through is I used a rag and my finger and wiped stain over the sanded edges. You can also use candle wax before you paint then rub the wax off. Some people have used petrolium jellly on the edges then wiped that off after you paint. I have seen a tutorial where glaze was applied to the edges using a sponge brush and mistakes could be wiped with a wet cloth. I was actually going to try that this weekend on a red side table.

Cynthia's process is definitely much simpler. Sand the parts you want distressed, and only use the dark stain on those areas. No need to refinish your entire piece just to put some paint over it.

Another thought, spray paint with a flat paint in the base you desire, this will help when you distress so as not to sand back to the wood. I use Annie Sloan paint and find tutorials from PurplePaintedLady to be very helpful!
