Can bathroom tile (in and out of shower) be painted?

Lucid Designs on Jan 01, 2015This is a job that you want to hire a professional for. The only thing that can stick to tile in a high humidity area (such as a bathroom with poor ventilation) is lacquer based automotive paint. It has to be sprayed, and you need proper (meaning the incredibly expensive kind) face masks to prevent from inhaling the fumes. I've known quite a few pros that have ended up in the hospital on jobs like this, usually because their protective gear faltered during the job. So call around for companies that specifically reglaze tile (interior painter's are not the right people for this job). Do not take the lowest bid, as those are the companies that won't be prepared to do this kind of job. Make sure they're licensed and insured. And don't go the handyman route.Helpful Reply

Linda J on Jan 01, 2015Lucid Designs is correct! I logged on just to tell you that. In addition though, you can in fact paint tile in other areas. Lots of information on the internet. I painted tile in a kitchen for a friend and it turned out beautiful.Helpful Reply

Teri Shehorn on Jan 01, 2015There is a product made that will adhere to tile. Glidden Gripper. In any case, improving the ventilation in a bath is important to keep mold from growing. Not just the mildew that you probably are already fighting. I'd hire someone to install a vent before I'd attempt any type of updating of the tile. I've seen where some people have tried everything to remove grout stains, the best solution I've seen is painstakingly painting the grout only.Helpful Reply

Julies1949 on Jan 01, 2015I painted the tile in my bathroom years ago and there was not so much as a scratch when we were ready to do a complete reno. Clean the tile with tsp, use Zinsser Bullseye Primer to ensure the paint will get a good grip, then paint.Helpful Reply

Tim D. (The Retro Den) on Jan 01, 2015Rustoleum has a complete line of spray paints at Home Depot that would work well if cleaned very very very carefully using Denatured Alcohol and wearing chemical gloves, rags, mask and goggles to do the prep work. Nothing ventured, nothing gained...Helpful Reply

Robert Snow on Jan 02, 2015I did our half bath a few years back that had ceramic tile half way up the wall . First I scuffed it with 180grit paper then I used a 3M red scuff pad to finish it off . I then primed the whole area with ZINSER 123 primer and let it set for a few days . After it had hardened for a few days I used the 3M pad to smooth it out , painted with the top coat 2 coats and let it dry . To this day you can take your fingernail and it won't scratch off. It should work on your project . I think the trick is to let the primer dry for a couple of days if possible !!Helpful Reply
