Can you use an area rug over carpeting?

Jaime LaPlant on Jan 04, 2015I've seen area rugs over carpet and it doesn't look bad. The only thing I would worry about is if it was a tripping hazard.Helpful Reply

Tammy on Jan 05, 2015Of course.. I have used a large area rug under my bed on top of white wall to wall carperting to add warmth to the room. Try using one at an angle to give the room an updated look.Helpful Reply

Carole on Jan 05, 2015Try Velcro - that might help it stay put. Having said that we have one over carpet in our lounge and it does tend to ruck up a bit. We have the coffee table sitting on it and having to pull the rug straight now and again. Maybe I should try my own suggestion! LOL!Helpful Reply

Creative Interiors By Connie on Jan 05, 2015Absolutely you can put area rug over carpet. Layers add interest to a room. It anchors the floor and can add color which adds visual interest. Make sure it is big enough.Helpful Reply

Creative Interiors By Connie on Jan 05, 2015It should not be a tripping hazard. Put a waffle pad under the rug. This is very good design.Helpful Reply

Creative Interiors By Connie on Jan 05, 2015One of the best painted rugs is a piece of sheet vinyl. Prime the piece and go to town. Base coat with back ground color then stencil or hand paint a design. Finish it with 3 coats of clear to coat. This is very durable. You can ask flooring stores for a remnant and cut it any size you want. Very cost effective.Helpful Reply

Creative Interiors By Connie on Jan 05, 2015Make sure your rug is large enough. In a dining room, the rug should be large enough when you pull the chairs out to sit, they are still completely on the rug.Helpful Reply

Creative Interiors By Connie on Jan 05, 2015In family room, it should almost fill the space of the sitting area leaving an area of flooring of about 4-10 inches visable.Helpful Reply

Tammy T on Apr 06, 2015Until I pulled up my carpets, I had a large area rug in each room. The rugs were so bad until I pulled them up. Wow, beautiful oak floors under those nasty carpets. Love the floor.Helpful Reply

Snapoutofit on Mar 10, 2016Yes, you can do anything you want. I would suggest a carpet pad under it though; it will prevent your wall to wall carpet from getting worn spots.Helpful Reply
