Could I paint a velvet chair, I do not like the color of the velvet!

Lucid Designs on Jan 06, 2015There are products specifically for painting fabric, as well a fabric medium that you can add to latex paint. Also, I've heard that chalk paint works great on fabrics, including velvets. Lightly sand between each coat and seal once finished.Helpful Reply

Marge on Jan 06, 2015What about reupholstering it? Painting it would be a lot of work. It might also turn out streaky.Helpful Reply

Shari on Jan 06, 2015Lucid Designs is right. This most certainly can be done. The most common ways seem to be with either latex paint mixed with fabric medium (purchased from the craft store), or watered down chalk paint. I've been collecting a few tutorials on this very thing since this is something that is on my "To Do" list. I just can't decide whether I want to use the fabric medium method, or the chalk paint method. You can find tutorials by searching "painting fabric" on the internet, here on HT, or Pinterest, and more than likely YouTube has some video tutorials too. When I try something like this for the first time, I always like to read as much as I can about the different techniques to see what worked (and what didn't) for other people. Here are a few links to get you started. If you try it, please share your experience with us. GarynSharon Daniels on Jan 06, 2015Fabric medium is definitely needed. You also need to be very meticulous and soak it just enough with paint or it will show through. Sometimes it is easier to de-construct and recover with another fabric. Either way, take your time and enjoy the new color.Helpful Reply

Lee on Apr 09, 2015FloorCloths have been used for years. The fabric is painted with regular paint. Then a varnish for the top so as to be walked on. Top off with a good floor wax. This would be similar to do with furniture. I am thinking it could have a leather look---? Google Floor Cloths for information of techniques. What is the worst thing that could happen? Can you live with that? and there is always trash day pick up if it did not work for you.Helpful Reply
