No matter what you do, it's gonna be a messy job :-( But hey, it's rock so it'll take whatever you can dish out :-) Try TSP in hot water (use rubber gloves to protect your hands). Use a brush that'll get into the crack and crevices, put down a drop cloth (I'd use plastic covered in old towels or rags) to catch the spilled dirty water, and go at it. You mentioned 'easy way'. You might try using the same TSP/hot water solution in a spray bottle first to see if it works without too much elbow grease. There may not be any easier way than good ol' fashioned heavy duty cleaner, water and your effort. ;-) Best of luck.

I wash the brick on my fireplace and the outside of my house with a stiff brush and a mixture of Dawn dish liquid and Tide. Don't use a wire brush! Good Luck!

TSP is the best. Use it in a spray bottle & with a brush. Protect you hands & wear old clothes. The TSP is harsh! I did a bar in AZ with 30 year of Cig Smoke! Thought the brick was brown . Nope they were white! Took me a week to get the two walls done! Then the next day I did just this a fire place. I never want to to this stuff again!

Messy yes. Use muriatic acid, the same stuf you clean concrete with. Available at hardware stores.

I saw this on one of the home improvement shows of TV. They cleaned the SLATE on a smoked-up fireplace with SHAVING FOAM. Said it is mostly soap anyway- Just spray heavily, let dry, then brush off. I would try this first!

@Grandmaquilts Well YAY on the shaving cream!! I ALREADY use it on my "marble "LIKE" sink that NOTHING else would clean without ruining it!! (hard water on black sink is UGLY!!! (I Let it dry and then wipe off with damp cloth)

I would not use muriatic acid on it, it can damage the stone plus it is dangerous to use. I use my small steamer on mine, does a great job.
