Koi purchase

Douglas Hunt on Oct 27, 2012@Sherrie S this is really beyond my area of expertise, but the Florida East Coast Koi and Pond Club recommends the Blackwater Creek Koi Farm in Lake County on their web site. There are also apparently sometimes rescue koi available. The president, Joe White, lives in Port Orange.Helpful Reply

Sherrie S on Oct 27, 2012@Douglas Hunt funny you would mention rescue Koi. My pond is and was all rescue fish except Whitey who came to me from the pond installers. Thank you so much.Helpful Reply

Sherrie S on Oct 28, 2012@Lou B I will be looking for a large KOI because of the skimmer and vacuum in the pond. The fish has to be at least 6" to stay out of harms way. I don't want to buy from what I would call "fish mills" I'd prefer a place that grows & takes cares of the fish.Helpful Reply

Sherrie S on Oct 28, 2012@Lou B & @Carroll A . My 87 year old friend works at both Petco & Petsmart selling dogfood. I'll ask her about the care of the fish at the store. She is at the age she has strong attitudes about everything. Thank you for the suggestions.Helpful Reply

Carroll A on Oct 29, 2012The pet store I worked at was not a chain store, it was a mom and pop store. We check pretty carefully to make sure we did not buy from mills of any kind. Most of our pets came from local families that their pets had babies.Helpful Reply

Sherrie S on Oct 29, 2012@Carroll A I wish I knew a mom & pop place where I could see the fish. We had some places like that but unfortunately they went out of business. Although I love the interrnet I don't want to order a live fish over the internet as I have experienced trouble with shipping.Helpful Reply

Carroll A on Oct 29, 2012I hear you there. I live in a fairly small community so there are not many chain stores here. I am not sure I would buy fish off the internet either.Helpful Reply

Sherrie S on Oct 29, 2012@Douglas Hunt I just found the place in Port Orange that has rescue Koi. They require info and a Pic of the pond & they don't ship the fish so I like that. I'm waiting until the guys finish fixing up my pond so it will look pretty without the planks across it. Thank you so much for the idea.Helpful Reply

Douglas Hunt on Oct 30, 2012@Sherrie S : I think any koi would be lucky to find a home in your pond. I'm glad they are so particular about the homes they go to.Helpful Reply

KneeDeep Ponds, Inc. on Nov 04, 2012When your looking for small numbers your local people are going to give the best service. The one thing you do want to make sure of is that the Koi you buy are tested for Koi Herpes Virus. Quarantine at a specific water temperature(87*F) for a two week period. If the store or fish rescue doesn't know what that is, walk away. This is a disease you don't want to bring into your pond. If you don't know what it is go to www.koivet.com. This is a great site for learning about Koi and fish in general. We buy from Kloubec Koi Farms in Iowa and have good luck with them. Good Luck PS are you going to post pictures of the pond re do?Helpful Reply

Sherrie S on Nov 04, 2012@KneeDeep Ponds, Inc it took about two weeks before my 2nd pleco came out of the tunnel today. Both plecos knew about pond tunnels & I'm so happy they used them when the Heron arrived. All of my fish but one came from people that needed someone to care for their fish that became too big. Pics will be posted very soon.Helpful Reply

Sherrie S on Nov 04, 2012@Ellen H me, too. Shadow was given to me by the guy that modified my pond and also built my other water feature. Well, today I emailed him to tell him Shadow is live & well. I'm lucky because I have a pond that can handle big fish (up to a point).Helpful Reply

KneeDeep Ponds, Inc. on Nov 09, 2012glad to see you are using the fishing line solution...just got a look at the pictures last night. It is so much nicer to view the pond activity with out all that other stuff in the way...I think you will find that you don't need the net over time especially the way the fishing line has been installed...happy ponderingHelpful Reply

Sherrie S on Nov 09, 2012@KneeDeep Ponds, Inc. Thank you. I'm just so paranoid about that heron so I will leave the netting on for a long time. I just bought one Koi to replace Whitey & he looks so small at 8.5". My few remaining Koi are quite large.Helpful Reply

Sherrie S on Jan 08, 2013@KneeDeep Ponds, Inc. well everything is OK now with fishing line & net. I'd like to know what type of fishing line you use and how many runs you make with the line. My fishing line only holds about 10 lbs. I'm thinking of 60 lb line?? What do you think.Helpful Reply
