I'd always wanted a small pond, so one day I simply started digging a big hole near one end of our deck. My husband helped when he got home from work. We have big dogs and had to take their safety into our design. We started wide and built in ledges by stair stepping the hole and we ended up with a deep hole that had a flat circular bottom and sides gradually stair stepping apart up to a wide top. We put in thick black plastic sheeting and started filling it up, adjusting the plastic as we we went, adding smooth pieces of slate along the top ledges. Once filled, trimmed the plastic, leaving enough to fold over so that it wouldn't show. Then we put slate around the perimeter that covered the plastic and overhung the pond. We added stones and large rocks along the the perimiter. We let the water rest for a week or so and then added a small water pump to provide aeration. Then we put in various water plants that we got from a lake and secured in plant pots with small stones (no dirt). Once the plants became adjusted to their new environment, we got a few small fish from a pet store and added them to the pond. We fenced off the pond from the rest of the fenced backyard and added a gate so that we could enter the area but the dogs couldn't. We spent many an hour leaning on our deck rail that overlooked the pond, feeding the fish and simply enjoying our little pond. Birds drank from it, frogs came and we built them shelters. I made a bridge of small sticks about a foot wide and maybe eight feet long to span the pond and provide a strip of shade. That was years ago and the pond is filled in and the area is full of flowers.
