Get rid of insects in your pinecones before you decorate with them!

Bake your pinecones to kill insects and stop the sap flow.Bake at 250 ° on a foiled lined baking sheet. Let them cool before you decorate. http://refreshrestyle.com/2012/10/how-to-bak...

Great idea. Another thing is to remember to check your Christmas trees before bringing a live one into your home. One of our funniest memories as kids was when we had a praying mantis egg nest hatch in our house that was on a Christmas tree. The warmth of the house triggered the hatch and we had hundreds of tiny little praying mantises (manti?) all over the house. We realized what had happened when we were awakened by our mother screaming when 20 or so of them decided to join her in bed....LOL

i was told another way to remove bugs and prepare pinecones for use in potpourri is to dunk them in a bleach water solution! Haven't tried it yet but that would be an even simpler way to get those little buggies out!

Great idea! Probably better than plunging them in boiling water with cinnamon like I did last year...they smelled good though :)

@Joline Cosman: Google "lake tahoe pine cones". We recently ordered a bunch from this particular company (http://www.pinecones.us/) and had really good luck with them. The Jeffrey pine cones are HUGE (and awesome). Otherwise, I see this other company offers similar services: http://laketahoepinecones.com/

Sharon, if anyone out there would like to offer me a huge pinecone, I would gladly pay for the costs to ship it !!!!! I just think those huge ones ore soooo coooool !!!

I have to admit, I never thought about them having bugs ! Doesn't the oven dry them out too much, or just enough ???

I am really enjoying Hometalk, and a few others, namely, Pinterest, Loveit, and Stumbleupon ...»

!!! I enjoy pinning something I Stumble, and Loving stuff I see everywhere !!! People have such fantastic ideas !!!!!!!

Vikki Gavin if you just search pine cone ideas, u will find more than u can use.....make frames, baskets, if u have a fireplace......make scented ones for it to toss in, orns. for your Xmas tree, put them in a basket with lights like I have done with greenery and some fake apples and lights up...or use those big cans u buy at Xmas time or now actually with popcorn and stuff in and they make a ice holder for the same thing to set ...»
out or a gift......I have even made a picture frame with them that has a mirror and put lights around them for the wall, also used a picture frame the same way and put pictures behind the glass...so many ideas to do, just search it and even on here, search HGTV.....many ideas there for sure, hope some of these have helped!!!!

Haha Leslie, my mom used to order praying mantis eggs for her garden. one year set some in her bay window and forgot about them. Wellllll, my chair at the table was right next to the bay window. One morning I saw them hatching and started stomping on the floor and screaming....she was just below in the basement doing laundry. I'd never seen my mom come up those steps so fast! *LOL* We were big pranksters in our house!!!!
