You absolutely can spray paint a brass chandelier. Just take it down and buy Rustoleum or other spray paint from Lowe's or Home Depot. Put down newspaper or drop cloth in the garage so that it is out of the wind. You may need to use masking tape to tape over any parts on the fixture that you don't want painted. You can even spray paint the screws to put it back up in the ceiling if you want. Practice a little bit so you don't create drips.

My daughter did one for me....and she took black paint and brown and took a sponge and just dabbed it on while it was hanging and just kept working with it until it was the look we wanted ....everyone thought it was a new light.....you may have to pull it away from the ceiling a little while painting. The sponge was a craft type....get them at Michaels or a place like that.

I would rough the brass up just a little with sandpaper, spray 1 or 2 lights of a gray primer, and then use a flat black spray paint.

I would not use black. I would use oil rubbed bronze, which is very dark, but with a brown cast. Classier look than black.

There are patinas used for the lead in stained glass......easy to apply. I don't know if it would work, but might be working investigating. If so, it would be much easier to apply....wipe it on, wipe it off!

Since wrought iron is flat black, black primer would work just fine. Make sure to use one for metal, I would use Rustoleum. No need to rough up but wipe with vinegar and water to cut any grease. I have painted several chandys this way. I have also used the dab method as mentioned above. Works great if you want an antique look with more than one color. After the primer you can even use acrylic paint and then a spray sealer.

Hi- if you don't want to (or can't) actually take it down, you can paint it with chalk paint for a matte finish that looks like iron. Graphite by Annie Sloan is a great color for this.
