I need coat closet organization ideas??
We have a front closet with 2 bi-fold doors that looks like a bomb went of at any given time..any suggestions or recommendations for closet organization systems without using door space?

Lori on Jan 14, 2015I just re did my front hall closet with an idea from Hometalk. I took the rod out and installed hooks, 9 large double hooks and16 small hooks. I found a file holder which I prettied up and hung on the door for gloves. Scarves, umbrellas, coats and hoodies all go on hooks. It leaves the whole floor space open for shoes and or boots, but we use the back door more often so not many boots go in the front. I am really happy with it and eventually will find something nicer for the door but this works for now. Here is a picture.Helpful Reply

Funnygirl on Jan 15, 2015not sure where I saw it,but the bifolds were fused then switched the hardware to make them into French door style.Much easier access to your clothes, and you then have 2 large door panels to hang things on inside. Will try to send you a photoHelpful Reply

Betty L on Jan 15, 2015I have the same closet just inside my front door, and here's what worked for me. First, I removed all indoor clothing from the closet and put the clothes in the individual's bedroom closet. Ditto with the footwear. Only outdoor clothing and footwear are allowed! Then I pulled all of the hats, gloves, scarfs and accumulated stuff from the closet shelf. I bought a set of three plastic stacking bins from Big Lots and placed two of them side-by-side on the closet shelf...one for my hats, gloves and scarves, and one for my husband's. The rest of the "stuff" found a new home, much of it in the trash.Helpful Reply

Isa Belle on Jan 15, 2015We just put a bench in ours that has drawers at the bottom. All the misc stuff like hats, scarves, etc go in the drawers, there's a shelf above the rod for other misc stuff which could easily incorporate baskets and then all the coats get hung up on the rod. Hope this helps!Helpful Reply

Carolyn on Jan 15, 2015our house has very limited closet storage on main floor; so, I additonally, added an over the door rack on the outside of door; so I'm not always having to go into closet to hang my coat I use regularly; and can be used for extra company coat hangers; beside having another coat shelving/hooks on hallway wall for a few extra coats, umbrellas etcHelpful Reply

Terry on Jan 22, 2015I think I may know what you mean by "door space". I can think of two options. Switch out the bi-folds for sliders. They take up even less floor/door space. If that's not possible, (or even if it is) you can put shelves on each side of the closet where there is dead space and place bins on them for hats, gloves, scarves etc. I always used bins with covers so in the off seasons the items don't collect dust. You could choose instead to put a few hooks on one of the sides to hang umbrellas, dog leash, etc. A boot tray on the floor for wet boots and shoes will protect your floors and/or carpeting. A shelf above your coats adds more storage. You can use it for just about anything really. I keep a bin of light bulbs in ours because that's handy for our family. I use one side of the closet to store leaves for our dining table. Hope this helps or gives you some ideas yourself!Helpful Reply
