Sbsb1005 on Jan 15, 2015Depends on the design of the home. The home pictured above lends itself to natural stone. Concrete is an architectural element that lends itself to clean lines and simplicity. As for the walkway there are ways to add more character such as moss growing in and around it.Helpful Reply

Jean on Jan 15, 2015having used both here in my SW Florida landscape I can only assume that controlling the weeds that will pop up between the natural rocks on the slope is much more labor intensive than that of poured concrete or the use of large pavers, and a lot depends upon what type of feel you are trying to create in your garden and what works with the design of your home I wanted a clean modern look for my upper and lower terraces but to edge my planting beds I used natural stone that came from my yard during the process of installing all the large paversHelpful Reply

Liliana Wells on Jan 15, 2015The house lends itself to natural stone. But if you want a more formal look, then concrete blocks would be the choice. I wanted stones for a retaining wall I had built, but the contractor told me it would cost more to buy the rocks. Everything considered I had to go the less expensive way.Helpful Reply

Gary Olsen on Jan 15, 2015The pics at the start of this question are 2 entirely different landscapes. Both cement and rock have issues influenced by your terrain. Cement can be made to fit a flat terrain easier than rock, and rock can be easier on a steep incline than cement. It is not easy to get rock to fit together with other rocks. Some rocks could require 2 people or a tractor to install. Cement requires more prep work and must be installed quickly. Perhaps the best answer to your question, since information related to your specific site is unknown, is Both.Helpful Reply

Artist In The Garden on Feb 22, 2015Last time I was honest on Hometalk about my opinion on the looks of a certain artificial rock I got in trouble. Opinions can be misconstrued as unfriendly or negative. If someone walks around with their pants falling off- I'm going to let them know how goofy that looks. Sorry Doug. From my observation of human behavior, natural stone looks a million times better than artificial stone to nature lovers. City lovers can handle the fake stuff- because they're used to seeing a lot of fake things. Natural stone can be designed to be very low maintenance. One good trick is to first set up a wall made of heavy duty roofing tin first. This would be held back with deeply driven stakes made of heavy metal pipe crimped on one end. The boulders would be fitted tightly up against this metal wall hiding it very well. Foliage and flowers hide the top lip of the metal. ZERO weeding. Good drainage is very important. In 1986 I created rock walls in this fashion and they look the same today.Helpful Reply

Betty Johnson on Nov 03, 2015Is the design of your home more modern or outdoorsy? If you have a home that incorporates stone and timbers like in the top picture, then it makes sense to use natural stone outside in the landscaping. Personally, I like natural stone, but that's my style. http://www.glynnyoungsnursery.com/Landscape.html Helpful Reply
