You can take out that tub and put in a shower with glass shower doors. There are many tiles out there that have a gold tone to them to match your bathroom or you could use white subway tile to go with your sink. And I would get rid of the wooden toilet seat and change it to a clean white one.

Would go with white tile - classic and matches your toilet and sink. Can always go with gold coloured towels to pick up gold in flooring and maybe some greenery (artificial or real) to soften lines and add interest and freshness. Agree with Peggy Modglin - lose the oak toilet seat and replace with a white wooden one.

@Cris Melser , hi. I have a 60's bathroom too (mine is PINK!). I left the tub, added a shower (that flows into tub) and added grab bars. One right outside the tub, one at a 45 degree angle inside on back wall. You will miss the tub I'm thinking if you completely eliminate it. I need my bathtub to wash my blinds once a year and other odd stuff.

Thanks ladies. No gold in the tile, lighting I assume. We are getting a new toilet as it is low. May change out floor tile as well. Just don't want a sleek, modern look when the rest of the house looks country.

@Cris Melser Didn't know you were open to replacing flooring. Love Patty V's suggestion about hex tile. Truly classic and classy. But I would go with the gray and white instead of black and white. Softer look and makes space look visually larger. Mine had soft-white hex tiles surrounding a gray one in the middle. Saw them in a display at the local Home Depot but they no longer carried them. The supplier was Daltile. Forget the name of the pattern, but local tile place ordered them in from the States for me.

Lots of ideas on Pinterest. This one isn't too sleek or modern (in my opinion) especially if you used a curtain with it.

Maybe put in a black & white hexagon tiles on the floor or black & white square tiles. Put a shelf over the toilet and replace the medicine cabinet with wooden frame one painted a distressed white. Also, would do some sort of white shower curtain to make it lighter in the room. Or, if you can spare the expense, put in shower with white subway and clear glass with brushed silver framing.

We removed our tub and put a shower in. We tiled around the shower used grab bars, a hand held shower that is adjustable, instead of a door, just use shower curtains. Makes it easier to get in and out. Works real well for us especially my Mother n law since she is handicap.
