How do I paint this cabinet with chalk paint and not get it on the decorative trim? I really want it to stay the color it is.

The only thing I can think of would be to use the blue painter's tape and cover the trim. Maybe cut the tape in half and use very narrow strips so you can get into the edges and curvy parts. The very decorative center carved piece will be hard to cover, but I'd do the same and perhaps use a very small brush when you're using the ASCP to get up close but not paint it. To be honest. I'd paint the whole thing and then repaint the decorative edges with a color similar to what you like. I think Annie Sloan has a color very similar. From the picture the base of the piece looks grayish. I'e used AS's Cocoa which seems to be a warm grey. Good luck in whatever you choose to do. It's a great piece.

@Michelle M does the decorative trim come off?? That would be the best way. If it is the indents on the drawers and cupboards, I have seen on this site that putting a thin coat of vaseline on the surface prevents paint from staying on those areas and then wipes off when the paint is dry.

A good quality masking tape should help.

Put a coat of Vaseline over the decorative piece. I have never tried it but it sounds like it might work.

If you are just talking about the floral swag on the middle drawer, you can cover it with masking tape, getting into all the curves. Vaseline does work to a point, but its pretty messy to remove. Or paint the drawer with several very light coats of paint, sweeping the brush over the swag. Then immediately take a damp rag, wet wipe or Q-tip for the tiny spaces and wipe it away. Chalk paint removes easily from surfaces when it is not dry. This may leave some traces of paint on the trim, but that will enhance it.

Use a very small artist brush to get close .

I agree with Starr. Use the small artist brush with a fine thin tip. You could also paint over it with your main color and dry brush (light or heavy coat) with old ochre, old white or cream over the applique.

I've used a thin coating of Vasaline and it has always worked for me. Also using a stiff form (like an index card) and a small brush as you near the edge might help.

Great ideas everyone!! I think I will put a little vasaline around the trim and use a very fine brush. Thanks for your help!

Hi Michelle- if you use a very small brush, you will want to do several light coats. If you try to paint with a regular amount of paint load, you will see the brush strokes because you are trying to trace around the circular edges of the trim.

Go to an art supply store and ask for a masking medium that will work to mask off the piece. It will peel off easily.

Can you take the embellished piece off and then re glue it after you've painted?

Use saran wrap/clear plastic food wrap.

Hello, you could do on or two things to prevent the trim from being painted.

    1. You can use frog tape and cover the trim before you paint the cabinet with chalk paint.
    2. You could paint over the trim, them repaint it the same color or a contrasting color you love.

    Hope this helps you out.
