What to use to seal a painted finish

I purchased a thrift store table in dark finish. I then primed two coats and painted white several coats. This will be used every day in my kitchen. What is the best to use to seal the table top. I am not into the expensive paints. Just used semi gloss enamel.

If you used a semi gloss then I would say a water based verathyen or several coats of wax. I do like to use egg shell on all the furniture I paint, only because it takes all sealers a bit better. Good luck with the project!

Hi Judy.........one of my favorite finishes for painted wood is wax.........use clear or if you want to add a little more tone or depth to the piece you could use a tinted wax........the buff, buff, buff for a beautiful, durable finish. let us know what you decide

Semi-gloss enamel does not need to be sealed. If you do seal it be sure to use a water based product. Any oil based product will yellow over time.

Minwax polycrylic...water based sealer. I used it on a refinished toddler chair a few years ago and I keep a can (satin finish) on hand for ongoing projects. It does NOT yellow with age like polyurethane.

Tung Oil is also another choice that gives a wonderful finish to painted surfaces! Dries faster than other types of varnishes.
  • Thank you all for your suggestions. Sounds like I have several options.
