Dahlias form a large and diverse group of flowers. From mini flowers to plate size specimens. Lovely pastels or daring gem tones. Border plants or super tall giants. Dahlias grow from a tuber and given a few basic requirements are not difficult to grow. Most nurseries bring in a wide collection to choose from in the early spring. Once you've chosen your favorites take time to examine the tubers in the bag, making sure you have picked a healty tuber. A healthy tuber will help to ensure you have a healthy plant...
Everything you need to know for growing great Dahlias.
Beautiful semi-cactus Dahlia.
Smaller Dahlias make excellent container plants.

Lhanson on Jan 23, 2017I bought a bag of bulbs from Costco last year and planted them at our lake house. They bloomed all summer, and I had fantastic huge blooms. Cut them back this year expecting them to wither away since they are annuals. Will be so happy if they come back. If not, I'll plant more. They are wonderful for cut arrangements. I always had a vase on my front porch.

Sensible Gardening and Living on Jan 24, 2017Dahlias are not annuals, they are a tuber that will grow again and multiply. Our winters are cold so we must dig them up in the fall and store them. If your winter is really mild, they will survive in the ground.
