Modge Podge Question

Yvonne Day Aka Miss Ruby on Jan 22, 2015What was it doing? I know I have decoupaged on rough wood and I did not care for it because it made the pic look like pieces were missing. No matter what you do I would still varnish/ poly over it.Helpful Reply

Danee Kaplan on Jan 28, 2015I agree that the project in the photo has to be a decoupage. It is possible to do a transfer on a larger area but I find Mod Podge difficult to work with in this case. It is so wet and frankly I really don't care for it. Instead, I like to use Gel Medium. Yes, it is more expensive, but it isn't as wet as Mod Podge so I have fewer problems with the paper bubbling up and ripping. Gel Medium is a fine art supply long used by Mixed Media Artists but with the popularity of mixed media hitting the craft community, several companies recently started making it. Golden makes a terrific gel medium that has long been considered one of, if not THE best but it is pricier. Ranger makes one under the Dina Wakely line. I haven't used it but I LOVED their Claudine Hellmuth version and when they released Dina's they discontinued Claudine's so I suspect it is the same formula. Prima recently released one under Finnabair's line and I'm pretty sure Liquitex has one as well. Ranger's is $5-7 for 4 oz. One added benefit of Gel Medium is that it can be used as a glue to adhere heavy and larger 3-D objects= something Mod Podge can't do because it is too runny.Helpful Reply

Tina Lynn on Feb 01, 2015I've seen these done but you use a laser printer to print the pic, then use a gel medium to attach it to the wood, let it dry for 24 hours and then take a damp rag to get the paper off. When you get it wet the paper will sort of roll up in little pieces and come off easily but will leave the pic. Then you would have to seal it of course once you get all the backing off.... wait till it dries of course.Helpful Reply
