Why Your Clean Humidifer is Making You Sick

Easy
The air in my home is insanely dry this time of year. I thought using a clean portable humidifier would make life at home more comfortable. Instead, I get sick every time we run our humidifier. I tried cleaning and disinfecting it every few days, changing the tank water daily, yet I would still get sick.
I did some research and I had a conversation with my doctor about my humidifier problem. I figured out four possible solutions.
After trying three of the solutions I found (including a different method for disinfecting my humidifier and switching to distilled water.) I was still getting sick!
It turns out the type of humidifier I was using was causing all of the problems. For all the details check out my blog post.

I MUST use a humidifier in the winter. It's amazing how many people think they're sick when it's actually their nasal cavities and mucus membranes dried out! I found that if I let a 1/2 full humidifier sit over the day, there's a good chance it'll mildew. That night, I'd be pumping mold spores into the room causing huge allergic reactions. I make certain the tank is completely full, even to the point of refilling it so the base also holds it's max water. This has proved to prevent the mildew and I haven't had any more trouble. Once a year, usually in the spring, I do a 50/50 water and white vinegar mix. I set it outside and let it go until empty. Cleans out the lime scale and any other "ick" stuff in there. I let the tank dry with the top off, so as not to encourage MORE mildew! Then I put it away for the season. Hope this might be another method for you.

@Deirdre Sullivan That is absolutely horrible! I have serious allergies, but have lived for decades on Benedryl (and espresso) before they invented nondrowsy antihistamine, and now it's Clariton-D (and espresso, since I love it!) I guess I'm lucky. I even sleep with one of my allergy furballs - er, a cat. :) I'm very glad you figured something out. Knowing what dehydration can do, then throwing in those real sicknesses? How horrible. Good job figuring it out. That couldn't have been easy.
