Is there a non-darkening clear finish for clear heart redwood?

Lori Ireland on Jan 26, 2015My brother completely gutted my kitchen. For cabinets I bought unfinished oak cabinets. I like light wood so instead of staining them I just sprayed lacquer on them. The have a light shine and it pulledout the grain in the wood, easy clean up. It didn't darken the wood either.Helpful Reply

Lucid Designs on Jan 26, 2015I think the question that you're trying to ask is how to keep the current color of the unfinished wood, and not asking about something that darkens over time? If so, the answer is that there is no such product. If you moisten a part of the unfinished wood, any clear-coat will turn the wood the color that the moistened unfinished wood turns. There is no way around this. The only oddball thing I can recommend is that I was doing a dark teal venetian plaster job one day that is usually sealed with wax. The wax turned the teal plaster almost black, so after running some tests, the solution I went with was soaking and buffing the plaster with clear tile & grout sealer. This completely sealed the plaster, allowed me to burnish it, and only darkened the plaster by roughly 5%. I've never tried this on wood though, but it wouldn't hurt to run a test on the underside of whatever you're working on. But if you are looking for a proper protective finish on your wood, this is definitely not the route to go.Helpful Reply
