Does anyone have any ideas for an inexpensive way to make a 'mock' slipcover, so I'm not paying hundreds of $$$s and am not constantly fussing with fabric and re-tucking?

I read elsewhere that Blue Hawk brand drop cloths from Lowe's are nice enough to use for casual curtains, so they might be an option here.

I often use sheets. I also use thin blankets. Lots of variety in textures and colors that way. King size for large couches, and singles work well for chairs and recliners. Easy to toss in the wash when needed.

@Polly Zieper I just tuck them in. We have animals. When they are just tucked in we can remove them and wash them easily.

Go to Lowes or Home Depot, an buy painter drop cover they are made of canvas, prewash do not put in dryer, hand to dry I do not Iron mine I like that look. To make a neater fit put on furniture and adjust to how you want it to look and use old horse blanket pins for the country look or buy twill tape and stitch where you want ties. Then let the pets an children or the man use them, and don't worry they wear like iron.

sara, Do you have a pattern or specific suggestions? Because if I use drop cloths as slip overs and just drape them on the sofa, not attaching them anywhere, I think I'll be constantly tucking in and fixing wrinkles.

I have used old bedspreads, sheets, draperies, and painter's drop clothes to make many different slipcovers in a really buttery gold that I absolutely love. The down side to that fabric was the pilling when cutting it up for the actual slipcover, but I got over 5 yards for just $10. LOVE how it turned out. :)

If you go with drop clothes, it's really important to use heavy duty needles on your sewing machine. Even those ones can break when going through many layers, so having a few extras on hand saves you from the hassle factor.

would you believe there is a "dummies" instruction on the web on how to do slip covers?

  • Dfm Dfm on Feb 16, 2017

there are several ways to do a slip cover.... it depends on the style of couch. the

'Lawson" i think is the easiest. it's pretty much straight lines, boxie- ish.

the more curves the more time and fuss. there are instructions on the web, or from a pattern company. do test strips of fabric to see if your sewing machine will sew thru your proposed slip cover fabric. to help keep covers tighter, pool noodles will help esp between cushion and back of seat. or if you have clean paint rollers those work too. elastic straps meant to keep sheets on a mattress can help as well esp if wrapping a back cushion. be mindful of safety pins they can come undone-yup i've been "bitten" bu them.

If you can find duvet's on sale online or discount store prices, you can wrap the cushions inside if you get the size you need for measurements of couch, then the straps for sheets to hold tight, do the same technique for back pillows and use pillow case or shams pinned in place on arms of couch no sewing !

Locate a Roses Dept Store-- they usually have AMAZING deals on stretch-to-fit slip covers, durable but way less expensive & effort.

Tuck some rolled towels into the seams when you're tucking in your slip cover. If you wedge them in tightly, the towels will keep your slipcover in place, minimizing the maintenance required.

I found some cute curtains at a thrift store for $7. I cut them into squares and used safety pins to hold them in place; the cushions on my sofa are not removable so I had to make the covers easy to remove so they could be laundered as necessary.
