Douglas Hunt on Jan 28, 2015As our wonderful Hometalk members are always showing us, there are countless ways to create successful yards and gardens. I think the only thing it is reasonable to expect is that it reflect the character of its owner.Helpful Reply

JoAnna Cooper on Jan 28, 2015Douglas is right, it should also reflect on local, for type of plants to that location, temp, sun, shade, and even liability ( water features around children )Helpful Reply

Beverly Beachy-Gales on Jan 29, 2015it should be all seasonal to the zone it is in, pops of color every where even reds for winter to bring in the birds, if in cold climate some evergreens so birds have shelter from the winds, make it personal with home owners hobbies and likes. take an old metal hanging light paint it add some tea cups and saucers for color and instant bird feeder, out door fire pit or place where permitted these are fun in the winter for mountain pies, and marshmallows. water features are nice, but some zones can create a lot of maintenance, and up keep, so go with simple but practical to the homeowner wishesHelpful Reply

Colette on Jan 29, 2015I agree with Douglas. Your yard should reflect who lives in the house. Its not about what's "in" or popular. It's about doing what you want to enjoy being outside with just you or family and friendsHelpful Reply

Gail Salminen on Jan 30, 2015@Socorro Gonzalez Douglas has given very good advice. Now you have to think of the areas where you were able relax - perhaps on a vacation spot. Think about what made it tranquil for you and try to incorporate those characteristics. For some it is gardens with a shady spot to sit and enjoy. For others it is something that incorporates activity. Lots love ponds. Need to also consider the required upkeep and what you want to put into it. Hope you update us on your plans and finished product. Remember your creation doesn't have to be done in one season you can plan it out over a couple of years or more - an evolving master piece in progress.Helpful Reply
