Paint and painters tape

I'm painting with craft paint and want straight lines, can I use masking tape or blue painters tape? Will either pull off my bottom coat of paint? PS painting wood. Thanks for any and all help.

As long as the base coat is properly applied and cured then it should be fine to use masking tape! To be safe just do a test on some scrap wood before you try on the actual workpiece!

Hi, Use the painter's tape, it is low tack! You will not end up with straight lines with masking tape! When you apply the tape, roll over it with a small roller to ensure you end up with straight lines! It lifts off easily compared to masking tape due to less glue on the tape. Don't pull long pieces off quickly go slowly! Watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDk0hgbqsP8 or go to frogtape.com. This is another good video about removing tape after painting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LmglKuLbA0M. Good luck and take your time! Patti

Be careful to buy the best painter's tape you can find. I used a "Lesser" brand and it did pull off the paint underneath. Did not matter that the paint had nearly a week to dry and cure, it still pulled it off. Have not tried frog tape so can't say if I like it but the blue painter's tape...you need to be sure you get the right brand. Do not get a generic brand.

I just read a bloggers 'how to' yesterday. After taping with blue painters tape or Frog Tape she put a coat of poly on the surface to seal the edges of the tape so there will be no bleed. I haven't tried it yet but whenever I paint stripes, no matter how careful I am, there are always a few spots where paint bleeds under the tape. Happy painting!

Actually a great tip is use painters tape and before you add your second color go over the tape edge with your base color. This step will fill any gaps with the base color and give you straight lines, but first and foremost make sure your base coat has dried and cured.

I paint a lot.... and the only one that does not run through is Frog Tape, costs more than most painters tape but well worth it!
