Cat smell

How can I eliminate the smell of cat urine, a male marked my garage as "his territory"? You can't find where it sprayed or I would clean it with vinegar, which has worked in the past for me.

  • Rent or borrow or purchase a black light. The kind we used as kids with all those posters. Close the garage door turn out the lights and turn on the black light. Any urine present will glow green. Do not be surprised that you will find it on the walls. If its drywall, it needs to come out. Once you find this there is a product called Natures Miracle. You can find it at most pet shops and some stores. Soak those areas in this chemical and it will neutralize the odor. But any wood, or drywall or even insulation that has been marked, you may need to remove it Framing you will need to soak it a few times.

Agree with Woodbridge, and add if carpet is stained - that can be cleaned, but if the stains go through to the backing, it's best to remove. Any items that were sprayed can be cleaned with water and then sprayed with Natures Miracle. Do not use soap first, or Natures Miracle won't work.

Goto the pet store and but a product called nature's miracle. It can be a little pricy but, it will breakdown the urine and remove the smell so the cat will not pee there agaIn. A word of advise do not scrub with a brush or overuse a carpet cleaner as it can unwind the twists in the carpet fiber and ruin it. Also test for color fastness before using on that area. You may need to apply several times but it will get it out.

Black light will help. But you are also looking for an oily like "splatter" on a most likely vertical surface.... Someplace smooth. At least a that's usually first choice for the naughty cats in my life! I prefer to use soda water to remove and neutralize. Less damaging for objects.

Yes a black light will do the trick. I use vinegar for clean ups too. But, for porous surfaces I have successfully used a mixture of a new 32 oz bottle of hydrogen peroxide (brown bottle at Walmart $1), 2 teaspoons of baking soda and just a couple of drops of Dawn. Mix in a glass container with a wooden or plastic spoon until baking soda is dissolved. Pour in a plastic spray bottle and generously spray or saturate the area and let air dry. Air drying on a porous surface breaks down the urine enzymes and eliminates the odor. I have used this on my fabric sofa, a leather purse and wallet (yes my cat peed in and on my leather HOBO bag), spot treating a down comforter before washing, a faux leather chair, carpet, sub-floor prior to re-carpeting. It was recommend not to leave solution in an air tight bottle or it might explode, but that has never happened to me. I have used it for spot cleaning areas where I have found hairballs too. It swear by this inexpensive solution to cat urine, or any other animal smells. When using on my laminate floor to clean and disinfect around the little box I do let it sit for a couple of minutes and then wipe up. I have never had it "bleach" any fabric or leather that I have used it on yet. Good Luck!!

Natures miracle is the cheapest, fastest easiest method. Not only will it get out cat urine but it will get out all kind of stains from clothing and carpet that other stuff won't get out. Plus it doesn't leave the soapy residue that attracts more stains.

I went to uncover my 25' pontoon boat one summer and found that cats had made their winter home in there. NOT HAPPY, My sister sent me a recipe for an odor eliminator. I made a bucket full and just poured it all over the carpet, Let it set as directed and later went out and vacuumed , I was amazed at how wonderful it had taken that awful smell out. in one gallon of water add 15oz Hydrogen peroxide 2 Tbs baking soda 2 squirts of dawn dishwashing liquid Shake for 1 minute and spray on area. (Important) Let dry to a white powder . Then vacuum up Like I said I made a 5 gallon bucket of it and poured it on cuz of the size of area , which meant I had to revamp the ingredients to make 5 times as much.
