What's stealing my seeds!?

I planted my garden last year and only some seeds sprouted, when I went to investigate and look for seeds they were gone, there was no obvious digging from squirrels or chipmunks, but real narrow tunnels underground, I don't think they were wide enough to be moles. Any ideas?

  • Sometimes birds eat them if they are close enough to the top. Sometimes seeds just vanish because they are blown away with the wind or picked up by the bottom of a shoe or foot when someone or thing walks over them. Moles eat grubs and they stay underground. Voles which are basically mice may eat seeds. Voles use the mole tunnels to travel and find food such as roots of tender plants (hosta, garden veggies) and even seeds and other food. You also need to make sure you are buying quality seeds too not just ones from the dollar store where the germination rate is very low. this year when you plant just make sure to buy quality seeds and watch for the tunnels. If you see tunnels then you know you have a grub problem which means you will have moles and voles visiting. Use castor oil mixed in a watering can and 'water' the tunnels. Castor oil is safe and effective in deterring rodents. Good luck

Voles. Voles are like mice, but smaller and with tiny ears. They will eat seeds and they love mulched areas and newly turned earth. This is a recipe for a natural vole repellent. I have never made it but it might work. http://www.nhhostas.com/organic-vole-control.htm

Please note that this is a vole, not a MOLE. Moles do not eat seeds. They eat insects.

I find squirrels digging up my seeds, and newly planted starts. It is very frustating!
