Use a light color to help reflect light. I would use a cream color in a satin or semi gloss finish, but any light shade would work.

We just did a very small kitchen with light cream top cabinets and a nice medium intensity color for lower cabinets. Matched upper cabinets to wall color. Looks very nice (Agree with @30 results are available, use up and down arrow keys to navigate.Darla).

Good advice has been given. If there is a good place to hang a mirror, this is good, too - bounces the light around.
