Hello. I need to replant some small cactus. What do I need to keep the stickers out of my hands and still be able to handle them? Thank you.

I use kitchen tongs to transplant my cactus.

I use those inexpensive flexible fabric gloves that are rubberized on the palms and fingers and kitchen tongs. Haven't had a sticker malfunction yet.

I would use the thick rubber gloves for taking hot things out of the oven. I don't like cactus but I have stickers on citrus and rose bushes. Works pretty good for that.

Use several layers of newspaper to wrap around the cactus. It works well on the barrel type.

@Sharlote I think all of the above comments have merit. I think a combination would be advisable. Using the layers of newspaper along with the rubberized fabric gloves would provide good protection. Will your transplants be sucker plants off the actual plant or from soil around. If from off the plant there may be other things to so, such as begin the rooting process by wrapping the sucker with plastic and earth to encourage routing. You may have more research to do.

I use my oven gloves to be kind to the cactus as well as my hands. Just grip lightly. Newspaper folded into a long strip also works if wrapped around the plant and held by the ends in one hand.

Take a piece of paper about as wide as the cactus is high and gentle lift while holding the paper around the cactus and loosing the soil at the base. Used this for years, cheap but it works.

Try using tongs like you use to pick up hotdogs. That's what we used to plant cactus gardens at the flower shop i worked at.
