Potted up paperwhites today under the careful watch of a new porcelain fairy purchased in Arden from the artist. You just need white marble chips or pebbles and a container to force paperwhites. Place stones in the bottom several inches of the container, add the bulbs and tuck more stones around them. Water with a water/alcohol mixture to inhibit the height of the emerging plants (and keep them happy !) I use 40 proof vodka so it is 7 parts water to 1 part vodka. Then jazz up the containers with Dollar Store ornaments and pretty wired ribbon. They are great gifts!

Douglas Hunt on Nov 26, 2012I recently posted on here about the alcohol trick with paperwhites and included a link to a Cornell article that gives the alcohol-to-water proportions for various proofs: http://www.hometalk.com/search?filter=paperwhites+alcohol&search=&zipcode=#!/679712/a-tipsy-tip-for-paperwhites-that-don-t-topple

Barb Rosen on Nov 26, 2012Thanks for the link, Douglas - it will be helpful to folks using this trick to keep the paperwhites from flopping over!
