Farewell old barn!

Rachael
by Rachael
We loved our old barn but it was time for it to go after over 100 years of service to us and previous owners. Read the whole story at The Rehomesteaders' blog: http://therehomesteaders.blogspot.com/2012/11/the-old-barn.html
Our once proud old barn.
Pulling off the wood we could salvage for future projects.
It was down in ten minutes with the help of a backhoe and bulldozer.
Burned before being buried.
The incredibly deep hole for the rubble.
All gone!

Very sad to ever see any historic barn be demolished. Yes, very sad indeed.

But, realistically, an unsafe structure is a huge liability issue for the owner. My father left his up too long, and during a big windstorm the whole thing came down with a huge crash, barely missing the house with all the flying debris. They found debris on nearby farms. Thankfully no one was hurt! This was in upstate New York where we didn't usually get wind like that, so it can happen anywhere. Sometimes all you can do is salvage what you safely can and demolish.

@Cynthia H I'm with you. We salvaged as much as we could, then had other people come and salvage what THEY could, then we had to have it torn down before we could sell it. It was full of nails, glass, wild animals and creaked when the wind blew. It was sad but the barn lives on as many people have a part of it. We even brought a few pieces with us when we moved and have made crafts. :)
