Paint for a slate floor
-
Straight Nails Construction on Feb 05, 2015It depends on the type of slate, and if it has been sealed or not. If you have an extra piece, you may want to take it to your local paint store and find out from them. If it is a porous product, it will have to be etched. After that, you will have to apply a primer to the floor, and then the proper paint product. Depending on the original color, you may be able to stain the tile to a different color as well.Helpful Reply

SK on Elderberry on Feb 05, 2015Straight Nails is spot on. I have "stained" unsealed slate in the past. If I were to actually use a faux finish to get a variegated look, I would strip the slate with a good grease, dirt stripper. If water still beads on the slate you know it has a sealer. If the slate turns darker with water it is clear of most sealers. I would then seal the tiles that are the hated color. Put tape around each tile to be painted. make sure the tape is sealed tightly. I would use a good primer for those specific tiles. Then paint each tile your desired color. Slate will look different from tile to tile so to keep the "slate" look you will need to paint with several different shades of your color. Then use an antiquing wash when the paint is dry. Wipe on a thin coat and wipe off, leaving darker colorations in the crevices. It might be much simpler to paint the entire wall of slate and then variegate each tile. There are loads of do it yourself videos available on how to faux a paint finish. I agree with others, I would buy a piece of slate at your local home store and experiment before tackling the entire wall. Good luck. Please let us see your results. skHelpful Reply
