Need help painting paneling

Susan on Feb 04, 2015I painted my dark paneling with a latex paint and it turned out great. I also added an additive called Floetrol ( Bought at Lowes or Home Depot). The Floetrol gives it a longer wet edge to allow for roller & brush strokes to smooth out.Helpful Reply

Rather Square on Feb 04, 2015We painted my daughter's wood-paneled playroom a light green, and it looks amazing! Check out our process and recommendations here: http://www.rathersquare.com/2013/12/painting-wood-paneling-brushes-rollers-beer/ Be sure to use an oil-blocking primer to seal in any wood oils before painting. Good luck!Helpful Reply

D & K on Feb 04, 2015If you have 100 year old paneling the chances are great it has an oil based varnish finish and in order to get the paint to properly adhere you're going to have to primer the surface. I would also highly recommend you use some type of degreaser the a deglosser to prep the surface. Primer and then top coat using a decent quality paint.Helpful Reply

Gail Salminen on Feb 04, 2015@Kim you have quite the project ahead of you. You haven't mentioned if the paneling is 100 years old or not. If it is the less expensive stuff from the 60's and 70's it may require a different technique. If it is real wood you could do a light sanding and then prime and paint. If it is not you will need to clean well, light sand and clean again and then prime and paint. Perhaps @KMS Woodworks could shed a more professional outlook on your situation if you provide the info about what kind of paneling it is.Helpful Reply

KMS Woodworks on Feb 04, 2015I would start with a quality primer like SW preprite - problock. ( this is after a good TSP cleaning ) once primed you should not have too much trouble with a basic paint job.Helpful Reply
