Front porch redo-outdoor lighting

Betty
by Betty
I would like to give my front porch a more homey feel by using a chair and a floor lamp. It is covered although rain does blow in sometimes. Must I buy an outdoor lamp or is there a way to waterproof a regular lamp. There is an electrical outlet on the porch. Thanks.

@betty my rule of thumb is if for outdoor use all electrical needs to meet code for outdoor use. You could consult an electrical store to get expert advice, perhaps you can transform the light to outdoor cording. I wouldn't take the risk as it may have an effect on your insurance coverage.

Daughter has an outdoor floor lamp that she plugs into the outside outlet. Don't think I'd go to the problem of trying to convert and indoor one for outdoor use.

I was going to say the same thing about a covered outlet for outside use. I've tried various settings of pole lamps, seat cushions, plants, candles etc. on and on. Now I've kind of given up on all that due to the fact that they get so dirty. It's a full time job to bring things inside and keep the areas clean. If you cover with cloths or plastic in between use I feel you're defeating the purpose.

Please make sure you have a lamp coded for outdoor use, otherwise you are just asking for a house fire. Please be careful, go to a lighting store or a store like Lowe's and they have experts you can consult and I am sure you will find something that is not only safe but beautiful as well. Keep us updated with photos. Would love to see what you come up with. Lotsa luck.

There are LED lamps available online. Try the shopping channel websites or major furniture stores, or other major department stores. Please, don't use electric lamps outside.
