D & K on Feb 05, 2015If the surface is actually wood you can clean with a good degreaser or TSP, primer it with a latex primer and then use a quality paint for the final finish. If you're going to roll it on, both paint and primer, use at least a 1/2 inch nap roller so you get down in all the little crevices. Ok, now if it's a vinyl coated paneling the process is almost the same except I wipe the surface with a lacquer thinner just prior to priming to soften the vinyl slightly, use an oil base primer and when dry, top coat with a good quality latex paint.Helpful Reply

BBB on Feb 06, 2015Also , just to add...if you don't want the lines in there you can use joint compound to fill before painting.Helpful Reply

Melinda Lockwood on Feb 06, 2015If you are going to fill with joint compound, let it dry thoroughly and then fill in the cracks that will appear. We did this recently and need to go back now and re-fill the cracks. Another option is to purchase wallpaper that is specifically made to place over paneling. It is thicker than regular paper and has a very slight texture.Helpful Reply

Lucy Nunn on Feb 06, 2015I TSP'd, used liquid sandpaper, and tried to skip the zinzer step. I used paint with primer in it and now my paint comes off and has disappointed me. I love the look of painted paneling though. Next time I will make better use of my palm sander. That's my 2 cents. Use a palm sander and good primer.Helpful Reply

Cindy Hagemann on Feb 06, 2015Kilz is the best primer for paneling that I have used. Paint the entire wall including seams with Kilz - let dry 24 hours and then paint. I have done my entire house like this and love the results. The painted paneling has a cottage look that is warm and wonderful. Good luck!Helpful Reply

Jani Wolfe on Feb 06, 2015We just did ours. It was from the,70's. I cleaned, with 409. We applied KILZ primer and then painted, with a sand color. Looks really nice. We cut the paneling off the top part,of the wall to make the bottom look like bead board. Painted the top wall a lighter sand color.Helpful Reply
