We have a fireplace that we do not use. I'd like to put an electric insert in it, hoping to use it more.

Designs by BSB on Nov 30, 2012Yes, the #1 reason you need an electrician is to bring an outlet to the area. Besides this there are several steps you need to go through to close up the flue - cleaning the box, closing off the damper and sealing off the chimney at the roof so that no rain can penetrate. If you are unable to do this, I would highly recommend hiring a professional - water and electrical don't mix :)Helpful Reply

Another possible option would be to convert the fireplace to gas (if your home is plumbed) Gas heat is often a far better economic choice...in terms of BTU's of usable warm per $Helpful Reply
