This over-sized and outdated nightstand was in serious need of a makeover. It had great lines and pretty curves, but something was missing. If left as is I fear it would have been stuffed in a corner and neglected. I had an idea...
Over-sized and Outdated Small Chest
I started by cleaning the entire piece with TSP that I had mixed with water. After it was cleaned, I sanded the entire piece. This step is daunting, but very important if you want to have a long lasting paint finish! After sanding I blew off all of the sanding dust then used Denatured alcohol to completely clean it. The alcohol works similar to a degreaser and removers EVERYTHING icky or sticky from the piece. I then applied my amazing Benjamin Moore STIX bonding primer. This stuff sticks so well! I firmly believe in proper prep and using a good bonding primer is part of that prep.
I found this lovely wallpaper at a yard sale for $1 and had been waiting for just the right project to use it on. I decided to use it on the drawers of this piece.
I applied the wallpaper to the drawer fronts using Modpodge. After it dried I felt that it was a little to vibrant for what I was going for with this piece, so I sanded the wallpaper back with a fine sandpaper to age it some. I loved the way it turned out!
When all paint was completely dry, I used this really pretty stencil from Art Minds on the sides. I used a charcoal colored paint for this.
I loved the way the side stencil turned out so I decided to use another stencil from the Art Minds pack and decorate the top too! The stencil is actually only half of this, so I had to apply it onto the left side, then turn it around and redo it on the right side.
Here she is all done! I love how the black glaze sits into all the detail areas. I think it gives it just the right amount of aging.
I chose a silver flat paint to use as my base. It's always best to use a base color before applying metallic paint and to choose a color similar to the metallic you will be using.
I painted the body and the top with Deco Art Elegance Metallic in Silver after the base coat. Even though the jar is only 8 oz. , it really goes a long ways!
After applying two coats of the metallic I used a black glaze to weave into the silver to give it an aged look.
