Furniture Makeover: From Old Outdated Dresser To New Stunning TV Stand

I was finally brave enough to turn an old outdated dresser I had purchased at the thrift store and with a couple of coats of paint turn it into a new stunning TV stand.
I need to explain that I was a bit hesitant to take the leap because of what my father did for a living. He was a professional and highly talented furniture refinisher. So I grew up with a knowledgeable understanding of what made a quality piece of furniture and how to look after it. He was a true craftsman who spent hours stripping and could custom colour match any type of paint and varnish.
But when I saw this large dresser at the thrift store I knew it had potential to be painted with chalk paint and become a whole new functional piece. It was quite outdated but it was well made. It also was not made of a quality solid wood so I didn’t mind painting it.
This is how it turned out!
I have to say it was a pretty easy DIY furniture makeover project. I didn’t even need any help to remove the two doors and all of the hardware. But I needed help lifting and carrying it because it was pretty heavy.
I decided to make my own custom colour chalk paint because I wanted to paint the dresser with the Benjamin Moore Colour™ ‘Hale Navy’. I have an accent wall in the basement with this colour so the newly painted TV stand would be a perfect match.
The drawer handles were first painted with a spray paint primer because they were made of brass with a piece of wood in between. Then I spray-painted them with two coats of a bronze spray paint. I had originally wanted to invest in some purchased handles to give the TV stand a whole new unique look. But I couldn’t find the right size and I didn’t want to go through the extra effort of drilling new holes and filling the previous ones. I was able to keep the cost down by reusing the original handles and I am very pleased with how they turned out.
I am so pleased with how this furniture makeover turned out for several reasons. It fits beautifully in the downstairs family room. Makes a perfect TV stand and it provides some extra storage with the drawers. Even my father gave this furniture makeover a thumbs up!
